Given that I have just presented my project to the entire office at my internship, I have little to complete to be ready for presentation on January 3rd, except:
I need to finish and revise my PowerPoint so that it can be used for my graduation portfolio and for the lower classmen. I will do this by documenting the process I have gone through in completing the newsletter that I just presented. I will also include what I have learned from my office about what is required to be a strong contributor to an architecture team. I think my final PowerPoint will reflect on the following themes and topics:
The Newsletter
The purpose of the newsletter:
-bridge the gap between the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco with Tom Eliot Fisch to provide a better understanding of each others needs.
-inform community of building process so that they can feel involved with development and are prepared for changes that may affect their daily lives (i.e. construction noise, demolition trucks blocking sidewalks, etc.)
-reassure community’s doubts of the designer’s efforts to preserve the historic legacy of the clubhouse
Development of the newsletter:
-initial concepts of asymmetrical designs and symmetrical designs
-importance of historical preservation vs. new site information on front cover
-collaboration of the two designs with resolution of cover importance
-critic of work helped recognize the hierarchy with titles
-interview redirected focus of project
Results of Director Interview:
-should not include new programs or services since the budgeting and designs have not yet been approved
-highlight importance of fundraising and need for extra funds
-legacy and site preservation important to highlight on front page
-expressed need for Spanish and English versions
-budget concerns result in need to publish black and white newsletters
Targeting the Audience:
-understand community and community needs (i.e. bilingual version, communities concerns with change of front entrance, etc.)
-present information most important or relevant on first page (i.e. “cushion the blow” for following information, or address issues head on)
InDesign Skills Mastered:
-text wrap: wraps text around objects or selected area
-free hand drawing with no tools: mixing geometric objects and manipulating lines to create desired shape
-graphic manipulation: how to tweak images to best suit your project
-creating logo: designed logo and placed it in setting, so that it can be used for facing layers
Use of WLE Project in TEF for the Future:
-created Tom Eliot Fisch legacy by establishing newsletter that can be used to inform TEF staff and BGCSF community
-began a series of newsletters that can be distributed to various Boys and Girls Club community meetings
The Office/ What it takes to be an Architect
The staff:
-very professional appearance, demeanor, performance and environment
-intelligent people, many too smart for their own good
-meticulous attention to detail
-requires 5+ years of schooling after high school
The hours:
-long and tedious
-9+ hours per day
The meetings:
-hours spend arguing over signage
-business based on pleasing the client while contributing individuals design perspective
The People you have to Please:
-clients (their money, their building, their decision -> your paycheck)
-city planners (historic qualities of a building, permits, construction damage)
-construction company (making sure they’re executing your vision)
The long term rewards/drawbacks
-projects take years to be approved and built (no instant gratification)
-once project is complete: art you can walk into and reap in its benefits
I’m not sure yet how I will layout the PowerPoint (two slides with the bullet points being the key topics, etc), but all of the above information will be presented.

I just finished all the things I needed to type for my project. I just need my mentor to look it over so I might email it to her but I also have to put in pictures. So I’m about almost done. I think I’m ahead of schedule in terms of my benchmarks. I might email it to her over the course of this up coming week with pictures to get it finalized and print it out. I think all I need to be done is just this project. The project is designed to get students informed about the DA’s office before deciding to work here like a brochure. So this project will help me get ready to actually present to the comic family. But I think I will also need to know exactly what we are presenting to them. Like are presenting our workplace or the process of getting in to a workplace. Because if it is the process then I should think of more of how I got in to here or maybe talk about how I ended up here even if I didn’t get my first choice. I guess I also can say how it was like for the first time in 11th grade to be looking for an internship. This would be doing all those contact sheets we had to fill out and calling so many people along with interviews. I also can try to make a PowerPoint to organize the process of getting a wle. The PowerPoint will have everything I talked about but, I was wondering do we have to talk about what it is like working in our workplaces. I still need things to be clarified of what we are presenting.
I have already finished my project so I have nothing to do for it in the nest week. Maybe Ill have to print it out so that i can have it for when I present my work in january. To prepare for the presentation I think I will have to get the work that i did for the project. Get a little background on what I regularly do at my work and get print outs of what I did for my project. I can also get the criteria that I was assign to look for in an artist. I guess thats all I would really need to present it to the cosmic family. Maybe I can take screen shots of the website and make a slide show of pictures so the see what I was working off of. Thats all I really need to do.

Considering this project is directed toward the audience of the cosmic family, I decided to do an “electronic tour” composed of pictures and my knowledge about the ARC through a power point. What I need to get done is to take more pictures of the work areas and to learn a bit more about each station. I do not think I will need any assistance except for money to help me buy my very own camera so I would not be borrowing my mom’s cam. So I need to get the pictures and the power point ready by the presentation time. Hopefully I will not forget what I learned in the ARC come the 3rd because it would be horrible if I did because then I
So anyways today was quite the awesome day. We were low on staff today so it was kind of quiet and you can sense that everyone is really busy! Everyone worked really hard and I was so tired that when I came back from getting a drink I tripped on one of the ropes blocking access to the general public and landed flat on my ass in front of one of my co-workers and a huge group of Chinese people. But the coolest part was that I did not spill a single drop of my soda! Then I finally got to assert my power and yell at kids during Hawk Talk! It was awesome! I yelled stuff like “that’s for employees only!” and “Get behind the line!” And the people backed off! It was great to have that kind of authority and power over kids and I could see why people are so power hungry, because it is fun. Since it was a free day I got a free bagel courtesy of the staff and there was a ton of people because of the free-ness and since people are quite the cheap hobos and don’t want to donate or pay the admissions fee! Then Mr. Koh came and I gave him a tour of the facility and told him some facts and we talked about my project which was chill. Then I got assigned to help out in the “Herps Room” where all the reptiles are and I got to talk and listen to stories of the 1960s with one of my co-workers Ken. He told me about hippies and the Steinhardt (or however you spell it) Aquarium during his days as a youth. It was quite the surprise and it was kind of cool that I was able to get a glimpse of that era by talking about it with someone of that time. It was quite different from learning it by being told facts and stuff. Either that or Ken is just a good story teller. Then finally the day was over and I got stuck in horrible traffic that took an hour and thirty minutes to get by! It was horrible, but I survived and am now eating dinner and doing this blog! Hurray!!!!!

As of now my WLE partner and I haven’t started the final project at all. We have decided with Mr. Koh’s help that the best thing we can do is make our WLE mentor a website for his business. His works as a civil engineer and a contractor and has been doing this for a large portion of his life. He works alone and hires employees but he looks more for starting people. What I mean by that is he looks for people that are new to the world of contracting or engineering and teaches his the basics. The benefits of doing that is that he can pay these employees less than what other experienced employees charge. The problem with that is that the employees he hires learn the business and once they feel experienced enough they leave for jobs that will pay more. So because of these problems that he is faced with recruiting help we thought the idea of making his business a website would be the best thing we could do. We plan to make him up a website that will show pictures of his past projects and then projects we have worked on this semester. This website will hopefully give his business a better way for people to hear about it and by doing that it will give him more employees and more business. Some things we to set as benchmarks for our website will be to actually start working on the website, uploading pictures and videos, and putting in the info of his actual work. For example we will need to make a list on the website that will give people an idea of the different types of contracting and engineering work he does. We plan to get the site up and running by next week, and have the site finalized a few days before the due date. The problem with doing this as a project though is we will have to update and check the sight after our WLE projects are done. Our mentor isn’t very computer savvy so I'm afraid that the website will rot away if we don’t check up on it every few weeks for him.

Between now and Thursday December 13th I need to firstly make a list of everything that I am going to include in my presentation for the cosmic family. This is what I have so far for what I am going to have:
Explanation of what Parks and Recreation is and what their goal/service3 is to the city (mission statement). Who I worked for (Jim McCormick), what a gardener does (basic duties, I will refer to the handbook I attained at the workplace), the things I was in charge of (assistance and typical responsibilities), the tools and specific techniques that used while in the park (shovel, rake, pitchfork, chainsaw, pruners etc.). Specific things/jobs I remember or will remember, description of the environment and how it was specific to the type of people who work there, my time schedule and how it effected me.
Then maybe an overall sort of conclusion of how I honestly felt while I was at my internship. Then I will give my advice to the cosmic family. Including how important it is not to procrastinate and how starting early and by giving a large amount of effort into your search, the end result will be more desirable for yourself. Honestly, its true, and I will try my best to get that message across to them.
For my final project I will put together a sort of parks and recreation scrapbook. I will take some photos of completed/ typical tasks that I have been doing for the past some odd weeks in the park. My mentor and I were thinking of more ‘before and after’ shots would be interesting, and I could even use them in the actual cosmic presentation. Other things I think that I could do would be plant a tree or contribute to the park IN THE NAME OF CAT or something. I kind of want to collect the things from around the park, or maybe give some examples of how had civil servants work. Seeing as though Jim is in my family, I am also trying to push that people should be less careless or like completely ignorant as to the amount of work that other people do. And it’s also work that you’re not supposed to notice. Benchmarks are coming along, sort of. I need to get organized. Now or never I guess.

First for my project I need to get together some pictures of the shop, my mentor, and some styles. From here I hope to put together a type of idea board with different styles I like and what the shop actually looked like. So I will need to make a list of all the materials I will have to get for my project. Like big paper, glue, colors, magazines, pictures, and ect. From here I can start to place things together because my mentor will not be in on the weekend. So I will have to wait for him to get back to actually find a suject to show to board to and let them pick a style they want.
The person I got to cut their hair is Kim the art teacher. I will need to wait for assistance from my mentor to start to get my materials to get ready to do the cut. This I feel will just need to be the most significant assistance I will need in the project. But ssonce I keep changing ideas in my mind for the overall project I dont actually know how it will all fit together to benifit the shop. So I will need some other assiatant in really getting a stable understanding of what would be the best thing to do to help the shop besides actually cutting a clients hair.
What I will need to do before I do the presentation would be to get pictures and a tape of me cutting the hair of my person and to bring in my idea board to see where I was working from. I will then just Mkae an oral presentation and hope it all works out well.

For my final project I got the most of my manual done. The problem is that it isn’t very long because I didn’t do so many different thinks there during the weeks and so there aren’t too many things I can describe. But before the 13th of December I will try do add a couple more information so that some parts of the manual are more specific then they are now and so that it becomes perhaps a little bit longer then it is now. I will also think about if I forgot perhaps to describe something which I did during this time at my internship but on my timesheet weren’t any more things which I forgot to describe in the manual so probably I have already all basic information in the manual right now.
For the presentation of my WLE to the juniors I started yesterday a presentation. Basically I will present there then the parts of my manual because this describes what I did there during the internship. So before 1/3/07 I will have to finish the presentation and perhaps I will make then next week at my WLE a few pictures for the presentation so that the juniors can see how my working place at the internship looked like.
