Blog #6 - Week 6 10/24/07

Due Thursday 10/25/07 by 11:59pm

Conferences are coming up soon, meaning that it is the midpoint of the semester. WLE is a class just as important as any other class that you are currently taking. For this blog entry, you are required to self-assess your progress at your WLE by providing evidence/specific examples from your internship in the following categories:

1. Mastery of Knowledge

2. Application of Knowledge

3. Metacognition

4. Leadership Skills

5. College Work Habits

Lastly, you should also grade yourself in each above category (0-4) and give yourself an overall grade (0-4).

1. Mastery of Knowledge- 3
Being an intern at an Architecture firm doesn’t mean I have to memorize all of the city codes and rules and regulations for building, but it does mean I should be able to understand the general information being discussed. When something new is explained to me, I try to understand what it is, what it means, and how it’s used within its context; but I can admit, I usually don’t get it. When I don’t understand, I will politely ask for clarification and remind my mentors that I haven’t gone to grad school yet and don’t always understand what a ‘neg dec’ is or a ‘category exemption’. If I still don’t understand what they re-explained to me, I quietly run back to my desk and Google search a more general description. Luckily, my mentors understand that don’t have their same background in architecture, so they don’t expect me to understand everything. Although I don’t always understand the ‘lingo’, I give myself an “A” for effort.

2. Application of Knowledge- 4
From what I have discovered and been taught about the uses of InDesign, I have applied those techniques in the construction of the Boys and Girls Club newsletter. I have used my graphic design skills to develop a layout that is esthetically pleasing and serves my targeted audience. From my photography skills, I have been able to contribute site images that best portray the space I am attempting to sell.

3. Metacognition- 4
The majority of my time reflecting takes place while completing my blog assignments. My completed blogs are evidence of the time I’ve spent reflecting over my experience here. I feel I deserve a 4 because all of my blogs are up to date and in depth

4. Leadership Skills- 4
A leader is someone who has the initiative to make decisions and act upon them without the council of others. I have demonstrated my ability to be a leader by leading myself throughout the design and layout process of my newsletter. I feel like I am taking a leadership position in the development process of my newsletter by initiating the interview with the director so that my project can contain all of the right components.

5. College Work Habits- 4
To have strong college work habits, one must be able to think independently and outside the box. I exemplified my ability to think creatively when I came up with the idea to offer my newsletter in a Spanish and English version, showing that I know how to best serve my audience. Also, when I was told that I would be using InDesign on future projects, I decided to explore the program myself before being given a tutorial to best familiarize myself with the program.

Overall grade- 4

1. Mastery of Knowledge:4
Being at the Da's office I don't have to really memorize alot, i just have to memorize how to do the work I am give to by the DA's. they uslly only teach me once and then every time I do something like filing for the DMV record I have to fill out a slip and put in the codes for the person I'm asking for then the DA's code as well.

2. Application of Knowledge:4
Well useing what the DA's taught me only once and then them expectiong to know how to do something I would give myself a 4 because I uselly can do something again with out being taught it again.

3. Metacognition:3
Well reflecting doesn't really happen in my WLE it mostly happens here in the blogs because I go to my WlE and then I go here and blog about it but I think I can maybe go a little deeper into what I am saying about the DA's office that and I didn't do one blog.

4. Leadership Skills:4
I would say my leadership skills at the office has helped me because DaVonne sometimes sends interns to me to find out what they need to do or what they can do.

5. College Work Habits:4
I would say this is a 4 because I get the work done and I come there everyday so far.

Overall:4

Mastery of Knowledge-3
Interning at the zoo it is important that I remember the time for trash pick up and the characters of the animals. Sometimes I do not remember the time for trash pick-up, but i do remember mostly how to do my job. If I am wary about things I usually ask someone what to do and how would i go about doing the action. So I give myself a 3.
Application of Knowledge-4
I remember most things from my training and I rememberwhat to do and how to od them. I just need some more practice with some things to do them better. But other than that I think i deserve a 4.
Metacognition-3
I've blogged a couple of times and I think that i only missed a few. Since blogs require me to reflect upon my WLE experience daily I believe that the blogs I have done shows my metacognition and reflection.
Leadership Skills-2
At the Zoo I am a low rank intern and im the one who needs the council of others. Although I can make decisions for myself, I usually need the approval of staff members.
College Work Habits-4
I arrive at the zoo everyday from either 9:00-9:10 depending on the traffic from San Francisco to Vallejo. Once I arrive I sign in and check what needs to be done. So far I have not missed a day of WLE and I have stayed there until I am dismissed. I never tend to slack off until I have a break, so I think I deserve a 4.

1. Mastery Of Knowledge-3
I intern with a music distrubution company so there isn't too much to master. For the most part I log data from paper onto a computer. And the programs they use are quite easy to remember how to use. They are basically like filling out onlie surveys. But the sheer ammount of information needed to be logs is just overwhelming sometimes. So i'll forget some litte detail and have to go back over all the information until I find it. Luckily for me there is a quick search feature in the program.

2. Application Of Knowledge-4
Thanks to the computer skills i've picked up at C.A.T. it make my job a breezze. The program that we use to keep track of our projects resemble the blogs we do for homework. The things we learned about photoshop an Illistrator. Make resizing screen captures and images a breeze for those little tuch up we need to do for the Meem and the myspace.

3.Metacognition 4
There isn't too much reflection happening at Iris. It's just go in and work. From tiime to time there is a bit of joking around with the other people working there but that's what makes my internship so enjoyable.

4.Leadership skills 4
There isn't to much to lead. Most of the task require little to no guidance at all and when there is something that I have to explain to my other co-workers it's not to hard to explain.

5.College Work Habits 4
I've showed up early most of the time to my internship. And as soon as I step in and check in with Mike I get right to work. With the daily task. Then it's off to work. Loging data. Doing research on competitors. Entering in new alerts to when contracts ends. It's all work with some play of course.

Mastery of Knoowledge-3
Working in the Bio lab provides plenty of things to learn. I may not have all of the most important things memorized, but I do have all of the basics. AS an explainer I understand everything that I have been taught, but I don't necessarily remember all of it. I need to relearn many things but eventually I get them down.

Application of Knowledge-4
For everything that I memorize, I can do it without assistance. It took me one try to completely learn how to harvest the Brine Shrimp, but after that one miserable attempt I can do it without any assistance and developed my own methods. For the Explainer part, I do very well teaching/giving demonstrations for Flowers, Cow Eyes and DNA. I never get nervous or loose confidence when teaching because then the people you are teaching will loose trust in you, and that is very important.

Metacognition-3
Being a constant learner requires me to always reflect so that I can prevent future mistakes from occuring. While working I tend to make constant mental notes on things that I feel I did well in and others that I know I have room for improvement. For example, whem giving demonstrations, I will try to add new things every time to make things more interesting. Sometimes I'll slip in something that the kids like and so I remember that for the next time and afterwards I reflect on how that demonstration went and why it turned out the way it did.

Leadership-4
I love being put in positions of Leadership because I feel that I can truly excel in that department when given the opportunity. I can provide quick answers to peoples questions and can confidently direct visitors to specific parts of the building, work and act independently, work and get along with all of the staff there.

College Work Habits-4
I am always puntual with no exceptions. When given an assignment, I stick with it untill it is through. I am at the Exploratorium to work, not to have fun looking at all of the neat exhibits. I belive that my previous internships have improved my professional qualities exponentially because of their demanding natures. It doesn't feel right to me to neglect my duties so I don't.

1.) Mastery of Knowledge – 3
I’m learning quite a lot at the zoo about how the animals live and what you have to look out for being in a place like a zoo while working. I’m also learning about what the other volunteers are expected to do everyday that they’re there (some of them come up to 3 times a week).

2.) Application of Knowledge – 3
At the ARC (Animal Resource Center) I was assigned an area, and on my third week of being on that area, I was tested to see if I could handle that area on my own. This Wednesday was my test on my second area. I think it went pretty well (or at least I hope so).

3.) Metacognition – 2
When it comes to Metacognition (I’m noting that spell check doesn’t recognize this word), I haven’t been reflecting much on what I’ve been doing. Being as I have the lives of other living things that are taken at least somewhat seriously, I’m mainly focusing on making sure I get my job done without killing anything.

4.) Leadership Skills – 1 or 2
I haven’t had a chance to work on leadership skills because I’m working with live animals that are property of the San Francisco Zoo, but I will be getting the chance to improve my leadership skills when I’m done training.

5.) College Work Habits – 4
When working with live animals, responsibility is the only thing that really matters. Being negligent can mean the end of an animal’s life, especially being as the animals can’t exactly tell you what’s going on.

Overall, I’d give myself a 3 for what I’ve been doing in the WLE. For all I know all that animals I cared for (except the ones that die on an everyday basis) has survived my cleaning their habitat. I was able to catch four run-away mice for Christ sake.

1.Mastery of Knowledge:I give myself a 2.5. I have learned some things about simple hair rollers and cuts but when I try to do it later in the day I have a very hard time. And since I have no prior experience of cutting hair its hard to cut it with no direction or help.

2.Application of Knowledge: I would give myself a 3 because what I have learned from my metor about cutting and styles I apply to my manakin. Then it makes it easier for me to cut and imagine how it would look for a real person. According to the face structure and what they actually want.

3.Metacognition: I give myself a 4 because I always blog on here about my day and at the end of day I talk to my mentor about how the cut and style went. To see if we can improve it the next time or just move onto a new one.

4.Leadership Skills:I woild give myself a 3 because at my internship I have to answer the phones and act as a responsible worker. So it really shows my skills my communication skills and when a client comes in you have to make conversation so I always have to be ready to talk.

5.College Work Habits:I would give myself a 4 because this is what I hope to do in college. So I am just preparing myself for what is to come. This will also help me to really think if I actually like the job at a salon or If I may be interested in doing somthing else.

To be perfectly honest at first I considered WLE would be an easy way to get another day off from school. I thought of it as something that had to be done but wasn’t as important as any other academic class such as Literature or Physics.

Mastery of Knowledge: 4
Going every week to my job as a civil engineer has taught me a lot. I have never done anything like or similar to what I am doing now so everything that I am learning is new. The reason I am giving myself a 4 on it is because I have been taught how to use and work things out only once and that one time has been sufficient. I have not needed to have things repeated to me therefore saving a lot of time and making my work faster.

Application of Knowledge: 4
This relates to my answer for mastery of knowledge. It relates because I havent needed things to be repeated to me and once I know how to do a certain task I do it efficiently, fast, and well done.

Metacognition:3
There isn’t much reflecting to do at the worksite at my internship because I am always doing a different task or am needed somewhere. The reflecting usually happens when I am doing the blogs. I have thought about how some people have to do this particular job everyday and how after one day I feel beat up. It really takes determination to do this job.

Leadership Skills- 4
Our mentor pretty much puts me and my co intern to a small group and then gives us a task. Its our responsibility to find out how to get this job done in the quickest most efficient and cheap way possible. So I think I would get a 4 in this section because there is no guidelines. I am pretty much on my own with my intern trying to figure out how to finish our task.

College Work Habits- 4
I would say this is a 4 because I always show up for my internship on time and never have missed a day. I get the task assigned to me and get it done as well. I get it done before the end of the day and it always is a good job.

Blog #6
Mastery of Knowledge- The knowledge that I have attained so far through my internship by working under Jim McCormick has been carefully logged in my head. When I am doing a job, I try to remember the little methods that can be applied to the job so that it makes things easier for myself and for the next person that has to do it. The only way I feel you could practice Mastery of Knowledge at my internship/in my situation, is try and remember the details and little things that employees tell you, and then get to the point where they don’t have to tell you how to do something. (Grade: 4) I feel that what I discussed also plays into the Application of Knowledge. What you pay attention to is what you learn and what you learn is what you can further apply. (Grade: 4)

Metacognition-Being that my internship is more geared toward labor, it’s kind of strange be “thinking about thinking” in the park at 6:00 am. I know that there is a lot of thinking and problem solving going on, but it’s not very reflective. If there is a problem then you find the best solution, you make the job better for the park patrons and the next gardener who will have to face same job. Then you move on and just find the next problem, or whatever else needs tending. The upkeep of the park is so constantly needed, that there isn’t much time to reflect like that. (Grade: 3)

Leadership Skills-I work with a mentor, so I am not usually the one showing leadership skills. I think that the situation that would serve as a time when you get to show some leadership for yourself (or at least show that you are somewhat competent) is when you are sent to do a task individually. (Grade: 4)

College Work Habits- I think that the college work habits come out of holding up what you agreed when you signed that contract. Agreeing to be on time, working to the best of your ability, with the willingness to improve and learn. (Grade: 3)
