My internship duties involve small office assignments, such as creating templates for material specifications for various projects. Although I have no major tasks or assignments to complete on a weekly basis, I spend most of my time here sitting in on meetings or assisting in a site walk-through with Jill and Doug. I work mostly with Jill Kuper, but also report to two of the firms partners, Amy Elliot and Doug Tom. For tech support I consult Regan Martin, who helped me to understand the basics of Adobe InDesign. I have also worked with Katya Kazakova in creating binders that hold material information for specific work sites.
My final project will be one that informs the community of the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco about the renovation of the Mission Charter. Built in 1927, the Mission branch of the Boys and Girls Club sits on the corner of Alabama and 21st Street. Due to extensive water damage and lack of funding for upkeep, the building has been vacant for quite some time. Now several years later, the firm I work for has been given the contract to renovate and rebuild the existing location. They will keep the historical shell of the building, but knock down what has been added in recent years. They plan on renovating it to come fully equipped with a full size basketball court, game room, multimedia room, teen lounge, study center, and much more. My job is to help inform the community of what the plans are for the new site, so that they can feel involved in the process. I will create a newsletter, using Adobe InDesign, which will be distributed to community members, while I facilitate a community meeting so that local charter members feel like they are involved in the process. This community meeting will be a way for members to share their concerns about the new site, and provide suggestions for the final layout of the building. This will benefit my work place by making the approval process easier when it comes time to make final decisions, and to ensure the directors of the Boys and Girls Club are comfortable with the new design.

In my WLE I work with my Mentor and she tells me to file things that need to be done. Usually I just check in with her so she knows that I’m there. Then I would go off and file every thing that is in the in box. Then when I'm done with that I go around the office and work with who ever can use me. Which is mostly this guy named Dave his is in charge of driving violations. He has me working with him and filing and making new files. I also go around the office and pick out police reports to make copies for the lawyers who work there. Most of the people there are nice but some seem very mean and don’t seem to like interns working on these files. Their afraid that if we mess up that their files can be lost forever. I work with other inters from other schools along with one from CAT. They help though out the day and most of the people feel like their relieved that we do work their and help them out with all the work that would take themselves hours to do. Also sometimes the lawyers ask us on our input on something their working on because if they ask an other lawyer it wont have a better perspective. If they just ask each other they will most likely get the same answer of what they are thinking. My mentor said in a few weeks or so she is going to send me upstairs and work with the office upstairs. I will be working with them and troubleshooting computers. For a final project I don’t really know what I can do but hopefully I can find something that the place needs. I guess something I can do is set up a better system for their files. Because it’s really hard to work in the system they already have. Or I can do something with the computers and put some of their files on the computer. I can see if I can improve their web site. I don’t really know what I can do I think I'm going to need help picking something to do for my final project.

Well so far, all three weeks of my internship at the San Francisco Zoo was pretty much poopful. The days are poopful because my main task at the Zoo is cleaning the “Big Pens.” Maintenance for the Big Pens requires me to remove any stinky bed sheets, not step on feces, weigh food, and sweep animal feces and other waste products. I also disinfect and clean the floors, wood logs and other various structures inside the pens such as carriers. Removing stinky bed sheets is quite straight forward, you look at the bed sheets to see if there are any feces or urine on them and if there is not, you smell the bed sheets to see if they need to be washed. At the very beginning of cleaning the pens, I believe that it is highly imperative that you avoid stepping on feces, due to the fact that the feces will smear on the floor and will get stuck on your shoes, so when you scrub the feces that smeared on the floor it is harder to get off and your shoes may dirty the floor you are cleaning, possibly leaving a trail or feces causing you to spot clean those areas. Weighing left over food from the animals diet is important for the staff, so that they know if the animal is eating and is healthy. I must weigh the bowl with any left over food in it and log it down in a binder containing sheets of the animals that I am responsible for. Sweeping feces and disinfecting the pens is also quite straightforward, the pens are swept of feces and disinfected to promote cleanliness and so the animals do not live with their filthy poop. The people I work with seem to be nice people, although I have not talked to them much. Some of the people I work with are Anastasia, Roger, and Al. Anastasia is somewhat like a mentor to me, since I do not see Mr. Edell much. Anastasia pretty much taught me how to clean the Big Pens and she has trained me in the arts of handling reptiles such as lizards, frogs, snakes, and tortoises. Roger reminds me somewhat my grandpa, telling me things that I should know, like if there is some fresh browse near the wash-down area I have to bring it to the lawn and hose it down. Al is energetic and has a sense of great humor. When I work with him I somehow manage to get the job done almost twice as fast. Weekly tasks I have to complete are the Big Pens, which I explained earlier, and Hawk Talk. Hawk Talk is basically me going out of the ARC and onto this meadow where birds such as falcons, hawks, owls, and vultures are teathered. Armed with a binder full of facts about these magnificent birds, I go out there and I talk to the people who wander to close to me about the birds. I have no idea what I can do for a project but I will have to make up something that is sturdy and interactive for the public to engage in so that they may learn something about animals.

My internship at the Exploratorium is going great so far. I am volunteering in both the Biology lab and in the explainer program. I have about three mentors (at least).
My first mentor would be Norm Ten, he is the top scientist in the Biology lab. so far my responsibilities under him include maintaining all of the Biology exhibits, Feeding all of the critters in the lab and on the floor (exhibit), cleaning the lab supplies, and keeping the lab clean in general. I am still working on remembering all of the procedures and stuff but thankfully there are penty of other workers who are willing to show me what to do. there are plenty of fish to feed and beakers to scrub so i am never short on work in the bio lab.
My mentor for the volunteer program would be Ken. Ken is a really fun guy who is never short on witty jokes. In the volunteer program i am assigned to different exhibits in shifts. they have had me work on the drawing board and the wheat germ DNA extraction. most of the time they have me roam the museum and learn about the exhibits plus familiarize me with the whole place. there is always someone that needs help in one way or another out on the floor so i do what i can. Fernando is Kens assistant, he teaches me all i need to know from circut boxes to supplies. when i usually need help with an exhibit, i turn to him.
im not sure what exactly i will do in terms of a project yet but i am very sure it will soon present itself. i have a feeling that it will be doing something for the bio lab. Diedra told me something about fingerprints for an exhibit to build, that could be another possibility. well, ill keep you posted on my project status but until then ill keep thinking.

As I complete week three of my internship things have gotten much simpler. The days seem to pass by faster and working eight hours isn’t as grueling as it seemed in week one. I have asked to have more engineer work rather than translator work because I enjoy the engineer work a lot more than just sitting around and translating. So since the change was made my duties have become very clear. They have become from sitting translating papers and calls to actually being part of the group of people that comes up with designs for whatever it is we’re building and the actual building process. Week three duties involved designing and getting measurements for the floor and ended with actually putting down the floor and getting it nailed down. I work with three other people in my department. They are Antonia Jorge and Aaron. Their role is pretty much the same as mine. They help me make designs and blueprints and also they help me with instructing me how to build or what to do when its my first time using or doing something. My weekly duties never stay the same. One week I might have to draw up a blue print for a fence while other weeks I may have to do something as simple as bringing something down. The project we are working on is building a house from scratch. Our final project will be a completed house that has been built from pretty much nothing. We have already started working on it because on week 1 our mentor had already been contracted to build a new house so now we will learn the steps and strategies it takes to build a new house from the foundation up. We are working hard to finish this project before December 12 because we think that this project will be perfect to present what we have done and learned at our internship. Building a house will take many different skills from planning and strategizing to cooperation and learning what steps it takes to make a blue print and measurements needed for building. I’m really looking forward to going back next week!

Aright, so at my internship at the Debra King School my duties are simple but plenty. In the mornings when we have inside play time I play with them, make sure they dont get to rowdy, and make sure they share toys. A little later they have their first snack time. I help distribute an equal amount of healthy snacks for all the kids. Afterwards, they have outside play time. I supervise them, interact with them, and make sure their not acting 2 crazy. A little later we have lunch wear I aid the other teachers equally distribute even amounts of lunch to all the kids. Throughout the day after 'potty time' usually after every meal I make sure they at least try to go to the bathroom, some still have diapers and if they have to be changed I change them, and I make sure they all wash their hands with soap and water. Once their done I clean the big and little toilet just with an all purpose spray cleaner and some paper towel. Before nap time I bring out all the cots, and arange them. During nap time I make sure they all at least try and fall asleep. And that's a general over view of my duties. I work with these two teachers named Jesse and Alex. Their fun young lady's and I enjoy working with them. They do the same things I do and a little bit more since they actually work their. As a final project I was thinkin about taking the kids on a field trip, not sure where yet. I was also thinking about organizing and planning either a little dinner, get together, or event for the owner of the school, Debra, because she will be retiring after this year and she has been in this business for 35 years so she merits a great retirement party.

The first duty I have when I get to my internship is to fold towls. My mentor only does wash on tuesday so wensday is the big folding day. This takes up some time but then I get to rest a bit after that. Then we move on to looking through the cosmotology book to pick out the next basic roller do. This was the finger wave.

I didnt think it was gonna be very hard considering my manakin head had long hair which I knew was good for finger waves. But I was definitly wrong, it was one of the hardest thing I had ever done. Trying to make it stay on the side of the head was the hardest of all though. Some other things I have tried is a straightning wrap, roll curls, and starting a fade. Trying all these new things has been exciting and its also very challeging at the same time.

Once gustavo feels I have tried my hardest we take a break and have lunch. Then when I come back I will usually try to start a new project or watch him cut a customers hair and write down techniques I can use to do it on the manakin.Gustavo will point out certin parts to do and things not to do with the certin style. We then after discuss what we will try to work on in the future with that style and think of new ideas for the next weeks. The next project I hope to work on next though is putting in a breaided weave and then starting to do curls with that and thinning the bottom.

For my final project I was thinking to actually style and cut somones hair in teh salon. I will also show the steps it took to get there with a sketch and the materials I used. This may not help my work place but, it would benifit someone who comes to my workplace.

Yesterday I had my first day of the internship. First I had to wait there because I was too early because I had no idea how long I have to travel with the public transportations. Then I first spoke with Mr. Moissom, the contact of Mr. Smith. He explained me how the realtor business here in California works. Then a couple minutes later Mrs. Neufeld came because before she was still in a meeting. She is the person who is interested in having an intern. Then I spoke a little bit with the two persons about the internship program. After this they showed me the building and I met some other guys of the company. After finishing the way through the building they showed me a place where I can use a computer to work. They didn’t really know yet what I can do there but for next week they will find something which I can do. Then I started to compare the contacts in a contact list and look if some contacts are twice or oftener in there. If contacts were twice in there then I had to put all the information in one contact and delete the other. But this wasn’t very effective because the program wasn’t very good. If I wanted to add one information and an other important information was missing then I wasn’t able to change it because the program blocked the action. After the contact list I had to start to scan in the business cards of one of the realtors in this office. He has hundreds of carts but not the time to scan them in. The scanner was very practice. It scanned the card in, saved the image and wrote in a list all information like name, company, phone number and e-mail address which were on the card.
I don’t really know yet what I can do for the project. I have to see what they want me to do next week. One project which I could perhaps do is scanning all this cards in so that he will have a database with all the persons which he knows. An other possibility could be to write the contacts of my mentor in an other program which is more comfortable for her but it is a lot of work for her to find out how to put all the contacts in this new program.

My duties at my internship are basically to assist the gardener Jim McCormick. So they tend to change. I do everything form picking up trash around the regulated beat, spreading grass seed, repairing patches of grass, raking, pruning various species of plants and cutting off dead branches on trees. I rarely have to work with anyone besides my mentor Jim, but I have met various supervisors and people from all divisions of Parks and Rec. I usually like to just introduce myself and then like…not talk anymore. Its funny because if your working and you see someone with a city crest on an auto mobile you are supposed to look up and sort of wave. I wasn’t told to do this directly but it was very obvious that it is the unspoken rule. So now I do it, even though I have no idea who I am raising my hand to. Because there is no telling what can happen to the well being of the (or who will be living in the park) in a matter if hours it’s kind of impossible to create and follow a set weekly habitual working pattern. You usually tend to what is in the most need most. A few things need to be done regardless of what’s going on, like checking the sprinklers, watering the plants, damage control from teenagers doing donuts.
I am not sure what I will be doing for my final project. This early on in the WLE experience I feel that I should do something with plants. I don’t know how to put that into a presentation for the lower division classes. I think that either continuing my thinking until I find something better or talking to you or Jim about it will beneficial to my future project. Also I was also thinking about talking to someone who had maybe a similar, outdoor, internship and seeing what they did to bring the outdoors in would be a good idea. Christi Dolezal did her internship at a City Share organic farm, so I think I will talk to her first about it.
